How to Send STL Files to a Dental Lab

A digital dental case is easier to review when the scan files, prescription and clinical instructions arrive together. This guide explains what to prepare before sending STL, PLY or OBJ files to a dental laboratory.

Digital Case Submission Steps

• 01 Prepare the Prescription Include tooth number, restoration type, material, shade, implant details when applicable and any special instructions.
• 02 Export Open Files STL files are commonly used for geometry. PLY or OBJ files may include color or texture data when supported by the scanner and lab workflow.
• 03 Include Bite and Opposing Arch Occlusion, opposing dentition and bite records help the lab review contacts, clearance and design limitations.
• 04 Confirm Implant Information For implant cases, provide implant system, platform, scan body information and restoration preference before design begins.
• 05 Use a Case Reference Use an anonymous case reference and avoid unnecessary personal information in file names or notes.
• 06 Review Lab Feedback If margins, bite, shade or implant details are unclear, clarify them before production to reduce avoidable delays.

Digital File Checklist

• STL, PLY or OBJ files exported from the scanner or CAD system
• Prescription with tooth number, product type, material and shade
• Upper arch, lower arch, bite record and opposing arch where relevant
• Photos, stump shade or esthetic references when needed
